May 12th

The count down begins.....3 more classes to go!

And only 2 more sketchbook challenges!

Last week's sketchbook challenge was to draw something "Ying-Yang" opposites. And I was very impressed with how "out of the box" ideas.

Here are the winners:

Team Emma

Night & Day

(But the one on the right was a little different. She explained as Day dreams, and you dream at night while sleeping. So she turned it into a dream catcher.

They did it again...but this time they totally did it by accident. They both chose their ideas last minute and didn't even talk to each other until the reveal. They sure do think a like.

Team Rumplestiltskin

I love that she included all the opposites in the song "Hot & Cold" by Katy Perry

Team Hook

Batman & Poison Ivy

Team Regina

Red Light Green Light

We are still working on completing projects before our upcoming art show. Time to start working on the invitations!

This weeks sketchbook assignment is to design a custom shoe. I have provided blank shoe templates for Vans, Converse, and Toms.

If you were away please come see me to get your template.

May 5th

So the good news is that we are making great progress in completing our outstanding project that will be in the Year End Art Show (on June 9th). The bad news is that we only have 5 classes left until the show. I'm starting to panic as I always do before the show, and this one will be twice as big as before.

Here are a few pics of us working on getting everything completed, so nice to have the warm weather back so we can continue to melt our wax canvas art.

Our sketchbook assignment last week was to draw "Something Framed". There are so many ways the students could have taken this. For example: window frame, a door frame, an innocent convict, a vehicle has a frame, and so does a home just to name a few. And they actually drew almost all of them, great thinking!!

Here are this week's winners:

Team Emma

Team Rumplestiltskin

Team Hook

And I guess I will post Team Regina later as it seems to be missing from my phone. My apologies to the winner.

This week's sketchbook assignment is to draw "Ying Yang". Which means to draw something opposite, such as Hero/Super Villian, Fire/Ice, Summer/Winter, Love/Hate etc. Get as creative as possible!!

May 4th - Thank You

I've been a bit of a scatter brain for the last couple of weeks and keep forgetting to go back to the Art Room to collect our pieces the next morning. This week I walked into the Art Room and was shocked in both a good way but also a bad way. The Art Room looked amazing! Someone had taken the time to clean off all the counters, tables, and the mess (not made by the Art Club) was all gone. It sure made me smile. But then I realized that the art work from the Art Club that I forgot to collect was also "gone", and I started to panic. There were 2 artist pinwheels that were in final stages of completion that were no where to be found. I went to talk to our principal and she had let me know that the Grade 7's and herself took the time to clean the Art Room. And that since a few of the Grade 7's are in Art Club they took the missing pieces and put them into our storage cupboard to keep them safe. I was so happy and honoured by this that I wanted to say a huge Thank you to our principal and all the Grade 7's for cleaning the Art Room.

And an even bigger Thank you to the Grade 7's that helped take the time to ensure that the Art Club work was safe.

I can't say it enough, how much all my little artist make me so proud each and every week. Thank you again.

April 28

Now that we are all done with our Silhouette paintings, it's time for:

A Catch Up (Ketchup) Day

If you were in both sessions of Art Club this year here is the list of projects that need to be finished for the year end art show.

1. Watercolour Pumpkin
2. Wax Crayon Canvas
3. 3D Letters
4. Lanterns
5. Artist Pin Wheels
6. Silhouette Paintings

And if those are all done, then you can move onto the Mystery Animal Project. Which there are 3 people I believe that will be working on this one.

As for Sketchbooks, last week we had to draw a door. Here are the winners:

Team Emma

Team Rumplestiltskin

This week I'm asking that you draw - Something "Framed" get as creative as you can but make sure that whatever you chose makes sense for the subject matter. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

April 14

This week was the time to finish our silhouette paintings. Here are the artists painting up a storm....a little nervous but they are looking amazing.

Next week I will post a few of the finished paintings.

Sketchbook Winners:
This week the artists had to draw their favourite movie scene....but draw it like a 6 year old.

Here are the winners:

Team Emma:

From Disney's Up

Team Rumplestiltskin:

From Disney/Pixar Monster's Inc

Team Hook:

 From Disney/Pixar Monster's Inc

Team Regina:

From Disney's Up

I'm surprised that the artists could pick any movie to draw and the winners drew the same 2 movies, even I drew Monster's Inc. But it's no shock how much I love Disney, and my daughter looked like Boo when she was that age.

This week's sketchbook assignment is to draw a teddybear. Last week we drew like a 6 year old, so that meant little details. So this week I want to see lots of details, the fuzzy of the fur, or the stitching on the leg, or even the detail of the button eyes for examples.

Next week we will be finishing up our paintings, and start to polishing off our unfinished projects for our upcoming art show in June.

April 7

Welcome Back Artists! I hope you all had many creative days while on Spring Break. Now it's time to get back to work, as there is still lots to do before our art show in a few months.

Today we started the first part of our "Paint Nite" paintings, and we will finish them up next class. Our goal today was to complete the ombre background of our paintings and then to decide the composition and animal before next week.

We started by picking 2 colours (1 dark and 1 light) and then with a wet brush and long smooth strokes to blend them into the desired ombre look. Here are how some of them turned out.

I can't wait to see them finished.

Sketchbook homework this week was "What's in your bag?" Here are this week's winners:

Team Hook

A School Backpack

Team Rumplestiltskin

A Softball Bag

Team Regina

A Very Full School Backpack

Next week's sketchbook assignment is to draw your favourite movie scene as a 6 year old child. My inspiration for this assignment came from the board game Scene it! They have a group of movies drawn in "child's play" style that are displayed on a giant fridge. If you need inspiration maybe play the game with your family this weekend!! It's our family favourite. See you all next week!

March 10th

This week we started off with a warm up of dual hand drawing. This helps the brain think what both hands are suppose to be doing. It also makes you concentrate more on the designs. This is a great way to warm up your creative skills.

This week's sketchbook homework was to design a Team Logo for our Once Upon a Time Teams.
Here are the winners:

Team Emma

Team Hook

Team Regina

Team Rumplestiltskin will be posted next week.

Here's a picture of some of the students checking out each others sketchbook assignments. They are very competitive about this each and every week.

We are currently working on our "Artist PinWheels". And they are coming along nicely. I have finished my sample to show you:

My theme was Captain America, so I kept my colours Red, White and Blue. It does spin, but not quite as well as I would've liked. I think I'm going to continue to work on this.

Next weeks sketchbook assignment is to design a surfboard. It's been a long winter (a nice, and mild one though) and I am so ready for summer already. So lets bring a little summer into our Art Room. Check out the different styles of surfboards here on Keyo's website.

Have fun with this one, I can't wait to get started!
